Emley - Session 1P

(1.1, 1.2,4.1) In the first session we discussed prejudice and discrimination and the ways these could impact on CRI service users. The feeling was that prejudice and discrimination were commonly faced by services users the difference between the two terms being that prejudice is a preconceived bias against or for someone, discrimination is an acted out prejudice and has a concrete effect. Examples of a prejudice would be if someone saw a service user as being untrustworthy, worthless, etc. without knowledge of their circumstances/character. A discrimination would be if the person acted on this e.g. avoided the person, would not employ them, etc.

(2.1,2.2) The group came up with many stereotypes of service users all negative, Dirty, Unkempt, Unemployable, Aggressive, Dangerous, Unhealthy, Diseased, etc. and none positive.
My personal attitudes as regards prejudice have developed over time. I think it can be an effect of life experience that you come to mistrust stereotypes, prejudice especially if you have come face to face with them yourself.

(4.2,4.3,4.4.) The CRI can make sure they have clear Discrimination polices and disciplinary procedures to deal with any breaches and that they are adhered to throughout the service. With the nature of CRI clients and the amount of prejudice they feel outside the service this is essential.

(21.,3.1,4.2) I thought my communication within the group was OK considering it was the first session and the group as a whole seemed to gel fairly well with good discussion throughout the day, people were listening and debating/interacting well I think the nature of the group helped me to contribute and I wasn't uncomfortable about engaging.
