Session 2 : Stencil Concepts

Session Aims:

- Research how stencils can be used to create striking images

- Devise and pitch a stencil design concept

- Capture a stencil design concept

The group were asked to respond to the statement;

“I can create a stencil concept which can help motivate adult service users to break their personal cycle of substance misuse”.

The red marks represent how the group felt at the start of the session the blue shows how they felt by the end.

The group were introduced to Jim Cereal, a talented and successful artist from the One Trick Pony collective. Jim has had his work photographed by fans across the world and has featured in a number of street art magazines. Jim gave a short biography and sprayed up a demo stencil design.

The task for the session was to create some visual concepts for Jim to turn into stencil designs to be sprayed next week.

In order to think of striking visuals which could help motivate adult service users the group discussed key moments of motivation and change in their own past experience of substance misuse. Each member of the group devised a map of their journey and isolated the moments where significant events had happened.

Focussing on the positive decisions they had made, each participant worked on ideas for visuals which could represent their key moment and prepared to pitch their concept to Jim Cereal for feedback. The group listened to each others concepts in turn and gave feedback to each other on the ideas. A selection of ideas were decided on and taken forward to be prepared for production.

Here is a snapshot of Jim's sketch book:

We look forward to the next session where the group will be spraying their ideas onto canvas using stencils cut by Jim Cereal.
